The treasure, the oldest Kannada manuscript is Jain Bhandar, Mudbidri palm-leaf manuscript of Dhavala. It contains 1478 leaves in old Kannada from the 9th century AD.

The classical Kannada literature commenced with Kavirajamarga of Nripatunga (9th century CE) and was followed by Pampa’s Bharata (941 CE). The Kannada language has the highest number of Janapeeta literary awards compared to any Indian language. The Government of India designated Kannada a classical language status in 2008.
