Telugu- ‘Italian of the east!’ and the largest member of the Dravidian language family. It is the official language of the Indian States, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Languages make the world better. Currently, there are more than 85 million Telugu-speaking population worldwide. Telugu also has official language status in the Yanam district of the Union Territory of Puducherry. It is the 4th most spoken language in India and the 15th most spoken language in the world.

The rich history of origin and existence makes the language more powerful. The Telugu language descends from Proto-Dravidian and was spoken around the 3rd millennium BCE. The traces of Telugu words were found in Prakrit Inscriptions (gift of the slab by venerable Midikilayakhain) in 400 BCE and 100 BCE and discovered in Bhattiprolu in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu language holds a rich history of having a treasure of its ancient inscription. "The Bhattiprolu stone Buddhist casket in proto Telugu belongs to BCE 300, the Erragudi Asokan Rock Edict in Proto Telugu belongs to 257 BCE, the Ghantasala Brahmin inscription and the pillar inscription of Vijaya Satakarni, Vijayapuri, Nagarjunakonda, etc., belongs to the First Century CE.

Telugu, derived from the word Trilinga ( Srisailam, Draksharamam, and Kaleswaram) was also known as Teluṅgu or Tenuṅgu is one of the most beautiful languages in the world. Interestingly, It is famously called the ‘Italian of the east’. In 16th-century Venetian explorer Niccolò de' Conti, who visited the Vijayanagara Empire, found that the words in the Telugu language end with vowels, just like those in Italian, and hence referred to it as "The Italian of the East".

Telugu and Kannada languages are said to be two faces of the same coin. Both the languages are believed to be originated from the common ancestry of the old Telugu-Kannada script. Telugu and Kannada languages evolved separately in the 13th century.

There are three major dialects in Telugu.

  • The Coastal Dialect: Mainly spoken in the coastal Andhra region.
  • The Rayalaseema Dialect: mainly spoken in the four Rayalseema districts of Andhra Pradesh.
  • The Telangana Dialect: Mainly spoken in the state of Telangana.

Waddar, Chenchu, and Manna-Dora are all closely related to Telugu. Other dialects of Telugu are Berad, Dasari, Dommara, Golari, Kamathi, Komtao, Konda-Reddi, Salewari, Vadaga, Srikakula, Vishakhapatnam, East Godaveri, Rayalseema, Nellore, Guntur, Vadari, and Yanadi.
